WHAT
DOES THE WFRC DO ?
Teaching Tours
WFRC
addresses the educational needs of renal healthcare workers by sending
teams of teachers to areas of the world where renal replacement therapies
are being initiated. WFRCs teaching teams are recruited from member
associations and companies, and deliver teaching materials from WFRCs
compendium of lectures on renal replacement therapy.
WFRC
teaching teams:
- Teach basic
principles of renal replacement therapies
- Train selected
staff to teach others
- Provide
training materials for local teachers
- Establish
mentoring relationships
- Provide follow-up
from seminars and teaching visits
Requests
for WFRC teaching teams are carefully evaluated, and final selection
of teaching sites is accomplished in consultation with the WFRC Advisory
Councils.
Previous teaching
tours
1995 - Russia and
the Baltic States
A multidisciplinary team representing
the International Society of Nephrology and WFRC visited dialysis
units and delivered lecture programs in Moscow, Petersburg, Estonia
and Lithuania. The international WFRC team of nurses, a dietitian,
a social worker and a technician were from Belgium, Germany, the United
Kingdom and the Unites States.
The teaching programs were very well received at every location, and
the informal visits to the dialysis units were particularly effective
in stimulating energetic question and answer sessions.
1997 - Russia and Turkey
Based upon the same format as
the 1995 tour, WFRC once again cooperated with the International Society
of Nephrology in the planning and implementation of this second combined
tour. The WFRC team was again a multidisciplinary and multinational
group of highly experienced renal care professionals who were able
to bring the benefit of their long and valuable experience to colleagues
who are hungry for knowledge and information. Once again, the teaching
session proved extremely popular with lively question and discussion
sessions both during the teaching sessions and the informal visits
to dialysis units.
1998 - The Gulf States
WFRC again cooperated with ISN
in the planning of the combined Update in Nephrology and Update in
Nephrology Nursing Conference. Prior to the conference, WFRC team
members visited dialysis units in Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Dubai, Ras
Al Khaimah and Abu Dhabi.
In
all of these tours, WFRC team members learned as much about how to
improve the service we provide as the colleagues we were teaching
learned from us. As a result we have been able to make plans to improve
the services that we provide to our colleagues, and to enhance the
follow-up services that we provide after the excitement of the teaching
tour has passed.
